A Guide to Winter Storm and Freeze Preparation
A winter storm will bring freezing temperatures to Texas this weekend, including Conroe and Montgomery County. Freezing temperatures and winter storms can pose serious risks to homes, including the people, pets, pipes, and plants inside. This isn't the time to panic—it's the time to prepare! Here is an essential guide for winter storm preparation. Questions about heating? Call or text Easco Air Conditioning and Heating.
People
- When the roads are icy, the safest thing to do is stay off the roads and stay at home.
- Limit time outside and be careful of slippery, icy surfaces.
- Encourage family members to wear multiple layers of clothing, even indoors, and keep warm blankets and warm clothing, including hats and warm layers ready, especially in the event of a power outage.
- Set the thermostat to a comfortable, consistent temperature and avoid constantly adjusting it. If there are any concerns about the heater, don't wait and call for heating service immediately!
- Keep phones and power banks fully charged, and keep flashlights, radios, and extra batteries ready in case of a power outage.
- Stock up on food, water, and any necessary medication. Also, be aware that refrigerated food won’t last long if the power goes out. When preparing, focus on pantry items that don't require refrigeration or cooking.
Pets
- When it’s freezing outside, pets need to be kept inside.
- Limit time spent outdoors and keep pet bathroom breaks quick. Use pet booties for paws, which can suffer from frostbite.
- Ensure pet food and medications are stocked and ready. A rule of thumb is to have at least 3 days of food and water for pets, just as for all occupants of the home.
- Before starting a car, bang on the hood or honk the horn. Cats and small animals often seek warmth near or inside the engine block.
Pipes
- Insulate exposed pipes with pipe insulation if possible before the winter storm.
- In freezing temperatures, allow water to slowly drip from faucets.
- Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors under sinks to allow warmer indoor air to circulate around the pipes, especially for sinks located along exterior walls.
- Leave the heat running and the temperature set no lower than 55°F.
Plants
- Move potted plants indoors.
- Use blankets, old bedsheets, towels, and frost blankets or frost cloths to cover vulnerable outdoor plants and garden beds. Secure the covering to the ground to trap and retain heat.
Stay safe and warm indoors during the winter freeze and call or text Easco Air Conditioning and Heating for any questions about the home’s heating system.
